Self appreciation and self love are key to being spiritual. We are all part of the same universe and we are all part of the same universal energy that makes it up. If you can appreciate anyone or anything else at all, then you are appreciating a part of yourself. If you can love, then you can love yourself. And the reverse is true.
Loving and appreciating yourself enables you to love and appreciate what it is that surrounds you. Notice how healthy you are and how you feel better when you are taking care of yourself. You exercise, eat well and get the rest your body requires. Those are all ways of loving yourself.
Ever make a mistake? Sure you have. We all have. Do you beat yourself up over it? Or, do you learn from it? Mistakes are opportunities to learn. In that sense, they aren't mistakes at all. If you can appreciate yourself for giving yourself that opportunity to learn, then you are learning to love yourself too. Beating yourself up is stressful. Stress is perhaps the #1 killer in our society today. So many diseases are stress related. So why add to it? Love yourself. You can love yourself by appreciating yourself. No need to judge and create harm.
You appreciate as you learn to observe. Don't judge yourself as good or bad. Just observe. Look at yourself as if you were looking through the lens of a camera. It just records what's there. It doesn't judge. As you appreciate yourself more, you learn about yourself. Oh, you have certain preferences, certain habits, certain addictions, certain loves, certain ... You can then choose. Do you wish to continue with them all? Perhaps you'd prefer to change some of them. Through observation without judgment you can appreciate and choose. If you choose to love yourself, then your following choices will reflect that choice, provided you are conscious of your choices.
Many of us live on "auto-pilot" for a good portion of our lives. We develop habits and so on that we repeat. Some of beneficial and some are harmful. Appreciating those enables us to choose them consciously, or to choose to change them. Conscious living is about getting out of those habits - taking your life off of auto-pilot and commanding its direction. That is love!
As you appreciate and love yourself you can see more in others. Again, observe without judgment. As you see your habits you can see them in others. As you shift your choices those around you will shift. Your entire environment, your existence will shift towards one that is more loving to you. You do create your live, your existence, all its circumstances and events through your choices - both conscious and unconscious. Even events like being in an automobile accident are by choice. You may not have wanted it, but you did choose it. The simple act of being there (a choice) helped. But before that you likely chose to be in an accident. Even thinking you'd like to avoid it, gives it energy. You create a push against something you don't want, but that only gives it energy. Becoming more aware of your choices and the effect they have is powerful. You have the power to create.
As you appreciate yourself more, you learn that. Appreciate and love yourself. The more you do, the more you'll create of what you want.
